How is volumetric weight calculated, and when does it beat actual weight?

Why carriers charge for space
A vehicle runs out of room before it runs out of payload. A van carrying pillows hits its volume limit at a fraction of its weight limit, so pricing on mass alone would let bulky freight travel almost free while dense freight subsidised it.
Volumetric weight — also called dimensional or DIM weight — converts the space a parcel occupies into a comparable weight figure. It has been standard across air freight for decades and has been applied to road and parcel services since the mid-2010s.
The formula
Imperial (inches, pounds)
(length × width × height) ÷ 139 = volumetric weight in lb
Metric (centimetres, kilograms)
(length × width × height) ÷ 5,000 = volumetric weight in kg
The divisor is the variable that actually matters, and it is set by the carrier rather than by any standards body. A lower divisor produces a higher volumetric weight for the same box, so two carriers can quote very different prices on identical dimensions.

The pattern is consistent. Dense parcels are billed on actual weight; anything light in a large box is billed on volume. The cushions in row one weigh 3 lb and are charged at 56 lb — an eighteen-fold difference caused entirely by the box.
Rounding is where the surprises come from
Most carriers round each dimension up to the next whole unit before multiplying, then round the resulting weight up to the next billing increment. A box that measures 30.2 × 20.4 × 15.1 cm is treated as 31 × 21 × 16 cm — which is about 6% more volume than you measured.
Measure at the widest point, including tape, bulging seams and any handle. The carrier measures the parcel as it arrives on the belt, not as it was designed.
How to bring it down
Volume scales with the cube, which is why box choice beats rate negotiation:
- Use a smaller box. Reducing each dimension by 10% cuts volume by about 27%.
- Drop the outer carton on items that are already retail-packed and rigid.
- Remove void fill you don't need — then use a box that fits, rather than filling a large one.
- Split heavy, dense orders and keep light, bulky ones together; the chargeable-weight maths pushes in opposite directions for each.
